Introduction
[The Coach] [Where & When To Find Us]

The club was formed by David Gibson in 1994 under the umbrella of Lasswade Judo Club.  Since then we have continuously produced quality judo players right up to the current day.  Many of the players who started with The Club have progressed to such a level that they are now representing Scotland in international tournaments.  In January 2003, the members of The Club voted to go it alone as a new club, therefore Bushiki Kwai was formed.

Part of The Club's previous success has been its friendly atmosphere.  The Club has always been a great believer in enjoyment.  As well as the Judo, The Club has been involved in organising special events like Christmas parties, barbecues and alternative sporting activities/camps for the players and their families.

Since The Club was first formed in 1994 it's number of members has fluctuated through peaks and troughs. We are currently at a peak and hope to now keep The Club strong as the members are now more involved in the running of The Club since the launch of Bushiki Kwai.

The Club is primarily a Judo Club due to its history in Judo.  David Gibson together with Mike Gilhhooley, Ray Sheerin and Rob Weddel have formed a group called Kyusho Scotland which is cross training many Martial Arts from Japan, China, Thailand and the Philippines into their own clubs.

The Coach
My journey in the martial arts began in 1987 when I watched a training session conducted by Sensei Andy Malcolm at the Royal Commonwealth Pool, it looked like a tough training, well disciplined martial art.  I spoke to Sensei Malcolm who convinced me it would be a good idea for me to come along and give it a try, so I did and the rest is history.

Once Andy left the RCP I remained there for about a year until I moved my training to Lasswade Judo Club under Sensei John Barrington, I learned a lot there from both the Sensei and the other players.  This was a club where the training was hard but very enjoyable.  Amongst those who regularly trained at Lasswade were Sensei Ray Sheerin and Former World Champion Graham Randall.  I myself have represented Scotland on numerous occasions as a former member of the Scottish Squad, taking medals at Scottish and British tournaments.

I have been coaching since 1994 under Lasswade and have had great success with many junior champions in major National Tournaments.  My Club went it alone in 2003 as Bushiki Kwai, which loosely translates as Energy, Spirit & Mind Of The Warrior Club.

I have always believed that life is a journey of knowledge where you will continue to learn and hopefully improve yourself throughout your life.  My path led me to meet Master Gilhooley in 2002 who has introduced me to world renowned masters of Kyusho, Tuite, Ju-Jitsu and Karate, in addition I am also looking to promote and instruct Modern Arnis in Scotland.  I am now incorporating all these arts into my own training and through Bushiki Kwai, and Kyusho Scotland I am able to promote, teach and incorporate Tuite and Kyusho into Judo. as well as studying Senshi Ryu Ju-Jitsu and Karate along side the other Kyusho Scotland senior instructors.
